The Maintenance of Appearances
Many systems become skilled at maintaining appearances long after they stop supporting what is alive beneath them.
Field Notes
The tree survives inside an environment designed almost entirely without it in mind.
Concrete surrounds the roots. Maintenance trims the visible disorder. Workers preserve the appearance of health within conditions that quietly restrict it.
From a distance, the system appears functional: clean plaza, maintained landscape, organized city.
But adaptation is often mistaken for wellbeing.
Many modern environments ask living things to survive inside conditions fundamentally misaligned with their needs — then celebrate their endurance as proof the system works.
The visible stress is rarely where the deepest pressure exists.
Sometimes the most exhausting environments are the ones that continue functioning just well enough to avoid being questioned.
